Powerlink’s Apprenticeship Program 2025


We are offering three (3) apprenticeship streams based in Townsville:

 

  • Electrical Trade Apprenticeship – Substations
  • Electrical Trade Apprenticeship - Secondary Systems
  • Communications and Control Apprenticeship – Secondary Systems 

 

About the Program:

  • Work life balance. Our apprentices are required to travel regularly throughout Queensland and work on a 9-Day roster. This means you will be home every weekend and have every second Monday off too!

In your four-year apprenticeship program, you will work under the supervision of highly skilled and supportive tradespersons to complete your relevant trade, along with a range of other qualifications such as; a First Aid certificate, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificate and High-Risk Work licences (eg. Elevated Work Platform).


We are offering three (3) apprenticeship streams based in Townsville:

 

  • Electrical Trade Apprenticeship – Substations
  • Electrical Trade Apprenticeship - Secondary Systems
  • Communications and Control Apprenticeship – Secondary Systems 

 

The Streams

 

Stream 1: Electrical Trade Apprentice – Substations: In this apprenticeship you will implement, construct and maintain Powerlink’s primary high voltage plant and equipment for Queensland. 

At the end of this program – you will have obtained a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician, and can explore career pathways such as: Substation Trade Technician, Live High Voltage Substation Trade Technician, Site Supervisor and Substation Team Leader (optional to complete further study – either an Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering) 

 

Stream 2: Electrical Trade Apprentice – Secondary systems: In this apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to test, interrogate and commission the protection and control functions of Powerlink’s high voltage plant equipment. 
 

At the end of this program – you will have obtained a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician and can explore career pathways such as: High Voltage Protection and Testing technician, High Voltage Protection and Testing Specialist, and High Voltage Protection and Testing Team Leader. As well as optional pathways into engineering related roles.
 

(For this program – it is mandatory to complete further study (in parallel with your apprenticeship) - either an Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering)


Stream 3: Communications & Control Apprentice: In this apprenticeship, you will test, interrogate and commission the telecommunication and controls of Powerlink’s high voltage network equipment. 
 

At the end of this program – you will have obtained a Certificate III in Electronics and Communications and can explore career pathways such as: Communications and Control Testing Technician, Communications and Control Specialist and Communication and Controls Team Leader. As well as optional pathways into engineering related roles.
 

(For this program – it is mandatory to complete further study (in parallel with your apprenticeship) - either an Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering)

The community you will join

 

Based in Townsville, we are a passionate team, exploring how electricity works, solving complex problems and safely taking the initiative to get things done. We are hands-on and love working away in remote locations. 

About you

 

  • Hold a current Queensland drivers' licence (manual required or be willing to obtain) and have your own means of transport.
  • Completed year 12 with a pass in English and Maths (or in the process of doing so) – OR are mature aged (over 21years of age) candidate.
  • Have a genuine interest in how electricity works.
  • You like being hands on 
  • Have a strong work ethic.
  • Team player with good communication skills
  • Willingness for continual learning and tertiary study completion
